As of April 18, 2026, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is at a critical turning point. After a period of closure during the recent conflict, there is a fragile reopening underway, though the situation remains tense.

Current Status: Reopened (With Conditions)

Yesterday, April 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait is now "completely open" for all commercial vessels. This move coincides with the start of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

  • Coordinated Routes: While Iran has declared the passage open, ships are required to follow specific routes designated by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization.

  • The 10-Day Window: This reopening is explicitly tied to the current ceasefire period. Officials have suggested that the status of the waterway will be re-evaluated once the 10-day truce concludes.

  • Market Impact: The announcement caused global oil prices to drop by over 11%, as roughly 20% of the world's oil supply passes through this corridor.

The Ongoing U.S. Blockade

Despite the reopening, the U.S. has not lifted its naval blockade.

  • Targeted Enforcement: President Trump stated that while the Strait is open for general commerce, the U.S. Navy will maintain its blockade on all ships and ports specifically linked to Iran until a final "transaction" (peace deal) is reached.

  • Iranian Warning: In response, Iran’s parliamentary speaker warned this morning (April 18) that if the U.S. blockade continues, the Strait "will not remain open" indefinitely, highlighting the volatility of the current agreement.

What This Means for Shipping

Industry analysts (including Kpler and AXSMarine) report that while the physical blockade has eased, movement is not yet back to normal. Approximately 950 merchant vessels were trapped west of the Strait during the closure, and it will take time to clear the backlog. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is currently verifying if the "coordinated routes" enforced by Iran comply with international laws on freedom of navigation.
